People's Health Centers (PHC), through its mission, provides comprehensive primary healthcare, such as pediatrics, internal medicine, OB/GYN, dental, mammography, behavioral health, pharmacy, WIC, radiology, podiatry and laboratory services, to meet the health needs of the entire community. PHC provides quality health care and social services to thousands of uninsured and medically underserved people in the St. Louis community.

People's Health Centers also offers an open access clinic (no appointment necessary), client centered cluster visits, community health education, nursing, mobile van outreach, school-linked services and prevention health services.

Summary: The Obstetrical/Gynecological Nurse Practitioner is registered nurse functioning in an expanded role and level of responsibility in the provision of primary care to obstetric clients, family planning clients and well women’s gynecology clients and who has demonstrated advance knowledge and clinical skills after completion of a formal program of study developed jointly by nursing and medicine. Functions in People’s Health Centers, Inc. under the supervision of a licensed M.D., OB/GYN Provider or Medical Director according to established protocol.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities : include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Performs physical examinations and preventive health measures within prescribed guidelines and instructions of Physician.

Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.

Records physical findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition.

Discusses case with Physician and other health professionals to prepare comprehensive patient care plan.

Submits health care plan and goals of individual patients for periodic review and evaluation by Physician.

Prescribes or recommends drugs or other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures.

Refers patients to Physician for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment.

To the Individual

Recommend appropriate medication to be used in the treatment of illness by collaborating with the supervising physician and/or medical director or as outlined in the established patient care protocol.

1. Elicits and records accurate health histories.

2. Performs physical examinations and records findings.

3. Differentiates normal from abnormal findings in physical examinations.

4. Selects and interprets pertinent lab tests as required in the management of patients.

5. Identifies existing problems and organizes a comprehensive approach to management.

6. Initiate referrals to appropriate community resources, providing follow-up and coordination with various health disciplines.

7. Responsible for case management of the following:

A. Family Planning/Well Women's Gynecology.

Provide appropriate family planning information. Select and administer contraceptive needs to include:

1. Natural Family Planning

2. Creams, jellies, foams, and condoms

3. Fitting diaphragms

4. Oral contraceptives

5. Recognize and manage minor gynecological disorders according to established patient care protocol.

6. Recognize, prevent and manage cases of venereal disease, with appropriate follow-up.

B. OB-Prenatal

Identify and record the anatomical and physiological changes occurring in pregnancy, and determine the progress of the pregnancy; management of normal pregnancy.

To the Families

Counsel patients and families in the curative and preventive aspects of health.

Provide health education to patients and families.

Collaborate and interface with other members of the health care team to provide family centered care.

To the Community

Participates in community education seminars or workshops upon request.

For Continuing Education

Pursue further education as appropriate.

Pursue learning experience as presented in the clinical area.

Education Requirements: Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
