Job Description:
We’re looking for a Principal Engineer/Scaling Specialist to help make our applications faster and more efficient. As we take our popular web services into an already extremely wide and still growing market, we need to improve our software optimization and systems scaling.  In this position you will help us in this process of improvement through the definition and prioritization of performance concerns for our product.  
 
Job Responsibilities:
• Act as a leader in good development practice
• Build scalable software with numerous backend components as well as provide architectural advice
• Help increase the performance of our existing platform through the identification and prioritization of performance concerns
• Improve our non-customer facing components
• Develop and improve API usage and platform components
• Have experience using the API's provided by third parties (extensively HTTP at this point)
 
What We’re Looking For:
• Must have 5 years as a programmer, at least three of which are on systems with at least 10,000 users or more
• Must have experience with messaging systems and their designs
• Understand the general principles of CAP, and how to tackle them in a practical environment
• At least 2 years experience with a highly available/replicated SQL system
• Experience with both evented and threaded programming models
• At least 2 years of low level language experience in a professional environment
• Fluent in at least one scripting language, such as Perl, Python, or Ruby
• Experience using GNU toolchain profiling and debugging tools
• Consistently capable of delivering results whilst being self-managed
• Works great as a team player, working closely with many different individuals
 
An ideal candidate will have the following skills:
• Experience in at least one form of loose schema store, such as Redis or Cassandra
• Enjoy code golf for simplicity
• Not terrified of bizarre, obscure turing complete languages
• Understand the difference between automatic allocation and stack allocation
• Have a unix beard
• Have a sense of humor
• Be willing to pair program
• Have experience in one functional language, such as clojure, xquery, or haskell
