Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Pathways to Home is a year-round emergency shelter serving homeless individuals in the South Los Angeles area.  Those that are served are provided temporary shelter as well as case management services to assist with job search, medical needs, permanent housing and other supportive services.  Pathways to Home is dedicated to transforming lives one story at a time.


The Head Cook will bring a passion for fresh, wholesome food prepared from scratch as well as the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.  This position requires a commitment to safe and sanitary kitchen operations.  The Head Cook will:

  • Oversee all kitchen operations providing supervision to kitchen staff
  • Train lead cooks and assistant cooks to assure smooth kitchen operations in absence of Head Cook
  • Design food plans and prepares food consumption estimates for 400+ participants each meal
  • Prepare food and supply requisitions; order needed food, supplies and equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections of food preparation and serving areas as well as equipment to ensure safe and sanitary food-handling practices and housekeeping practices.
  • Review work procedures and operational problems to determine ways to improve service, performance and safety.
  • Prepare special menu items and participate in meal preparation as required.


  • Minimum of 3 years of industry and culinary management experience
  • Training at the Chef Manager level or equivalent experience
  • Experience with menu development as well as bulk ordering and food preparation
  • Knowledge of all cooking techniquest including, but not limited to:  grilling, deep frying, baking, broiling and microwaving of prepped and raw foods
  • Basic computer proficiency with proven ability to use technology for procurement, budgeting and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of kitchen business and management principles including assistant cook development; coordination of people and resources; production methods; and leadership and management skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Culinary degree preferred
  • Completion of a Certified Dietary Management program preferred
