About Us:

Africa faces a shortage of 1.5 million health workers. The continent suffers 33% of the world’s maternal and child disease, yet has only 3% of the global health workforce. Nowhere is the crisis worse than in rural areas of Liberia, which was left with just 51 doctors after its 14-year civil war. Today, people in remote villages of southeastern Liberia have to walk up to 17 hours to reach a clinic. Founded by survivors of Liberia’s civil war, Tiyatien Health is a start-up NGO that is redefining how post-conflict nations rebuild rural public health services. Filling the massive health worker shortage in rural post-conflict areas, we recruit and train villagers to serve as frontline health workers, delivering comprehensive home-based medical and social services in villages previously thought unreachable. We are growing quickly. Our initial cadre of frontline health workers delivers more than 2,000 home patients a month and has made HIV, epilepsy, and depression treatment available for a rural population of 23,000 people. This year, TH will be expanding our services to a population of 34,000 people in Liberia's remote Konobo District. Tiyatien Health closely partners with the Liberian Ministry of Health, Partners In Health, Clinton Global Initiative, and Harvard Medical School, amongst others. Our frontline health worker model has been recognized by Echoing Green, PopTech, and the Mulago Foundation.

Overview - Monrovia Partnerships Officer:

The Monrovia Partnerships Officer will represent Tiyatien in its efforts to promote the role of rural community health workers at the national level and identify partners in this important work. The Partnerships Officer shall seek ways to link Tiyatien Health’s innovative approach with existing policy implementation efforts including but not limited to the 2011-2021 National Health Policy and Plan, Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS), Road Map to Reduce Maternal Mortality and Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS). Soliciting and securing in-country funding from a variety of sources including government, multi-lateral agencies and various project-based initiatives is an essential component this role and is critical to Tiyatien’s success & sustainability.

Relationships are at the core of our work: therefore, the Partnerships Officer will necessarily participate in regular sub-committee meetings at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) and with other partners to build awareness of Tiyatien’s efforts as well as learn of upcoming opportunities for support and collaboration. This position will include elements of advocacy, writing, workshop facilitation and coordination, and donor relations. The policy advisor will liaise with program staff, ensuring efficient communication among the service, research, advocacy and training divisions. The Partnerships Officer is also head of the Monrovia office supervising a team that supports the national-level logistics and coordination needs of the Monrovia office as well as our Zwedru and Konobo offices. As head of office, the Partnerships officer is responsible for submitting a weekly work plan, maintaining financial records of office expenditures and facilitating donor visits while guests are in Monrovia.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead in-country fundraising efforts to support Tiyatien’s innovative community health worker model.
  • Nurture existing relationships with in-country stakeholders, partners and donors and cultivate new relationships as strategic opportunities and needs are identified.
  • Serve as the Monrovia-based point of contact for stakeholders, partners and donors.
  • Steward the arrival and departure of TH guests and provide a hospitable and welcoming environment for them while they are in Monrovia.
  • At the direction of the Program Director, draft, edit and assemble grant applications and expressions of interest for submission to prospective donors to support Tiyatien’s work.
  • Develop communications and fundraising materials including but not limited to powerpoint slide presentations, concept notes, draft budgets and donor correspondence.
  • Work with Program Director to develop fundraising and performance targets.
  • Communicate regularly with TH staff, including operations, programs, and administrative teams to ensure alignment of vision and identification of departmental and programmatic needs to be served by Monrovia team.
  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of the Monrovia office including:
    • Supervision of team of three (3) Monrovia-based staff
    • Submission of weekly workplan to Zwedru office
    • Maintenance of Office safe and disbursement of funds
    • Reporting office expenditure to Zwedru office
  • Perform additional duties as determined by the TH Executive Director and program management staff
  • Conduct oneself with utmost sensitivity, tact, discretion, professionalism and positive spirit.
  • Conduct regular trainings for local program leaders and management staff in areas of communications and advocacy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and relevant experience with international policy, development studies or health systems required; Master’s degree in public health or policy preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with government officials, persons at all levels of the public health system, those in different organizations, those with different cultural or linguistic backgrounds, and those in civil society.
  • High level of professional and ethical conduct.
  • Experience in communications, public relations, fund raising & development strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in personnel management.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Strong communication, organizational, and writing skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse team and in austere, complicated settings
  • Commitment to social justice and health care issues
