Last Mile Partnerships Officer

Southeastern Region, Liberia | Partnerships & Development

Job Description

About Us:

Africa faces a shortage of 1.5 million health workers. The continent suffers 33% of the world’s maternal and child illness, yet has only 3% of the global health workforce. Nowhere is the crisis worse than in rural areas of Liberia, which was left with just 51 doctors after its 14-year civil war. Today, people in remote villages of southeastern Liberia have to walk up to 17 hours to reach a clinic.

Founded by survivors of Liberia’s civil war, Tiyatien Health (known in the United States as Last Mile Health) is a start-up NGO that is redefining how post-conflict nations rebuild rural public health services. Filling the massive health worker shortage in rural post-conflict areas, we recruit and train villagers to serve as frontline health workers, delivering home-based primary care services in villages previously thought unreachable.

Tiyatien Health closely partners with the Liberian Ministry of Health, Partners In Health, the Clinton Global Initiative, and Harvard Medical School, amongst others. Our frontline health worker model has been recognized by Draper Richards Kaplan, Echoing Green, the Mulago Foundation, PopTech! and the Forbes 400 Summit. We were recently featured by Forbes magazine as one of a small number of organizations with the potential to transform Liberia and countries throughout Africa.

Overview - Last Mile Partnerships Officer:

As Tiyatien Health executes our plan to expand frontline health service across rural Liberia and save the lives of thousands more women and children, we are seeking a talented, creative, and driven professional who can forge lasting public and private partnerships in support of that growth.

The Last Mile Partnerships Officer is directly responsible for day-to-day management of all of Tiyatien Health’s in-country partnerships involving direct or joint implementation of our ground-breaking FHW program. This includes our partnerships with the Ministry of Health’s regional County Health Teams, our work with national-level projects such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberclulosis, and Malaria (GFATM), and potential future partnerships with commercial and non-governmental actors in Liberia.

Reporting to the Director of National Partnerships, the Last Mile Partnerships Officer will manage these relationships by building a strategy for outreach and cultivation of in-country engagements, helping to negotiate and finalize all memoranda of understanding and contracts, assuming responsibility for all communication and reporting to each partner, representing TH needs and concerns with partners, and tracking all current and emerging relationships.

  • In close coordination with the Director of National Partnerships, the Country Director, and the Chief Executive Officer, identify potential in-country partners for Tiyatien Health’s scale-up and help build a strategy for outreach and engagement.
  • Assist in negotiating and finalizing formal agreements with in-country partners.
  • With support from the Director of National Partnerships, assume responsibility for ongoing communication with current and prospective partners, including proposals, reports, and regular coordination of activities.
  • Using cost data and information about TH’s program structure, design new partnership structures (cost-sharing, hybrid public/private implementation, contracting) with various in-country partners.
  • Carefully track and document all in-country direct- or joint-implementation partnerships
  • Represent any TH needs or concerns—such as supply chain gaps or delayed funding—to partners to ensure they are promptly resolved.
  • Travel as needed to meet with regional and national partners (guest housing and transportation provided).
  • Adhere to the organization's financial, behavior, and ethics policies

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in public health or related field preferred
  • At least 1 year of substantive project management experience required
  • Experience working in external-facing role, particularly with senior public or private stakeholders
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with an emphasis on professional expression and relationship cultivation skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be flexible in responding to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Generosity of spirit, sensitivity/diplomacy, and willingness to make sacrifices in service of the mission;
  • Ability to work successfully both individually and as a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity and social justice
  • Preference given to candidates with work experience in developing countries
  • Previous experience working with public health strongly preferred
