The Business Development Director/ Manager, POPSUGAR Media, will focus on growing the POPSUGAR Media business via partnerships. Their goals include growing traffic and video views via audience development and traffic partnerships with publishers and strategic platforms (includes high growth startups to large premium publishers to portals). Business Development covers a range of relationships including: content syndication & licensing, as well as managing video and operating relationships with tech and content providers to Sugar. This person should be a self-starter and have a proven track record of procuring and closing deals, as well as have an established professional network within digital media.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Audience Development: Identify publishing partners and distribution opportunities across the POPSUGAR sites; independently procure and close deals.  Work closely with editorial to establish edit to edit processes for pitching stories
  • Content and platform partnerships: Build relationships with critical industry leaders (publishers, video players, and social platforms - e.g., Flipboard to Facebook to YouTube to Publishers) and identify opportunities to work together.  Manage partner relationships and ensure timely and complete execution of deals
  • Term sheets and economics: Evaluate deal economics and draft contracts and term sheets with help of Legal
  • Work with Engineering to ensure the correct infrastructure is in place for partnerships (e.g., Feeds)
  • Meet or exceed annual and monthly traffic and video targets
  • Track activity, and update and report out on metrics

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Ideal candidate has minimum of 3-6 years experience (Varies based on Manager or Director Role) working for a major publishing company
  • Existing relationships with key decision makers at premium publishers, key startups, and video / social platform companies
  • Demonstrable track record of successfully hitting ambitious targets and independently structuring and closing business development deals
  • Outstanding relationship builder
  • Versed in relevant technologies, economic models, and industry trends.
  • Strong understanding of media, commerce, and advertising landscape
  • Exceptional work ethic; is self-motivated and able to energize colleagues
  • Excel modeling skills is a must
  • BA/BS required with strong academic track record; MBA preferred for Director role
