The Opportunity:

Slate is hiring a Senior Accountant in its Washington, DC office.  The Senior Accountant will have wide ranging responsibility while supporting the financial controls and reporting of a dynamic and growing online publication.

We are not looking for just anyone, the Slate candidate must be extraordinary, willing and able to work collaboratively with all areas of the company.  The Senior Accountant will engage directly with members of Slate’s editorial, advertising, technology, and human resource teams while supporting our core business and broader business initiatives.


  • Perform monthly accounting activities such as gather, maintain and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries.
  • Query the general ledger and prepare accounting statements and financial reports.
  • Assist in the budgeting and forecasting processes, including variance analysis (vs. actual results).
  • Perform Accounts Receivable and related functions including customer billing, processing and application of payments and depositing of cash/checks.
  • Ensure proper revenue and expense recognition, including revenue deferral and expense accrual.
  • Assist in the monthly, quarterly and yearly financial close process.
  • Maintain the fixed assets ledger to ensure proper depreciation and perform any necessary maintenance.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual audit process.
  • Provide analytics and response to internal inquiries.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent educational experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • 2 + years’ experience working at an online media company (preferred by not required).
  • Hands on knowledge and experience using Oracle E-Business and/or similar accounting program.
  • Skilled knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel.
