Responsibilities:

Agency is seeking an exceptional Controller for its San Francisco office. The Controller is responsible for directing all financial affairs for the agency, including all accounting, information technology, credit and collections, insurance, financial reporting (in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)) and any other financial matters. The Controller will have the opportunity to shape the operations, logistics and management of Agency.  This includes guiding the company from a financial perspective and providing strategic financial input and leadership on decision making issues affecting the agency.  The Controller will also help to upgrade and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures by way of systems that will improve the overall operation, effectiveness and financial condition of the agency.  This role will require this candidate to be very hands on and integrated in the day-to-day of the business. This candidate must have previous agency experience and be motivated to scale the company drastically. In this role, the Controller will be reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Provide sound guidance to management regarding financial condition of the agency
  • Prepare and present (to management and board)  and review continuously short-range and long-range financial plans to achieve agency’s goals
  • Organize and manage the efficient operation of an lean finance team and help to oversee  certain operations/administrative functions for the agency including IT and office services
  • Develop tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and other constituents and make feasible recommendations on both strategy and operations to smoothly run and grow the company
  • Engage the board, audit and other committees around issues, trends and changes in the operation model(s) and operational delivery
  • Direct Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) processes to ensure timely billing and sufficient cash flow for the agency
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism which includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs of the agency and ensures timely invoicing to the agency’s clients and payments to outside vendors
  • Optimize overhead expenditures
  • Facilitate the optimization of the agency’s accounting software system by providing the appropriate information in regards to estimating, traffic, Profit & Loss, revenue and account summary reporting
  • Investigate and recommend outside resources for capital when needed, negotiating competitive rates
  • Act as a corporate liaison officer with all outside legal counsel and be the financial spokesperson for the agency
  • Maintain and administer stock ownership practices and reporting to shareholders
  • Oversee and direct the annual auditing process
  • Satisfy all regulatory and tax compliance filings and reports, while working to minimize taxes
  • Oversee financing strategies and activities, including banking relationships
  • Review existing client contracts to ensure maximum profitability
  • Preserve, protect and vigorously defend the agency’s assets, business and interests
  • Administer and coordinate legal action, when appropriate and warranted
  • Maintain all acceptable insurance policies to limit exposure that can occur in the production process and report on coverages, deductibles and co-insurance amounts
  • Report on risks not covered by insurance
  • Review, recommend and direct the appropriate capital expenditures for all technological areas
  • Work directly with executive team members in the forecasting of revenues and expenses for all clients, reporting to CEO, President, the Board and other constituents as needed
  • Oversee and administer all agreements for office/storage space leases, computer leases, etc.
  • Direct and manage the purchase of office furniture and supplies for both offices
  • Initiate meetings as needed with agency staff and/or executive team to address areas of concern or ideas for process efficiency and improvement
  • Effectively manage, motivate and provide leadership to a small finance team which includes regular performance reviews and plans for improvement if applicable
  • Perform staffing functions (hire, terminate and develop as needed)
  • Explore and develop new areas for agency growth and profitability
     

Requirements:

  • 5 - 10 years of accounting/financial experience with a minimum of 3-5 years in a senior management role
  • Must have advertising/media-related agency experience with a passion for startups
  • Must have startup experience (lean tech startup preferred)
  • Experience in an agile software shop a plus
  • BA in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • MBA highly preferred, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required
  • Strong business orientation with excellent analytical skills
  • Knowledge of corporate governance procedures and processes
  • Expert understanding of accounting theory and expert knowledge of all accounting functions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written, oral and presentation) with proven ability to engage with all levels including executive team, board members, shareholders and employees
  • Advanced PC Skills (Microsoft Office: PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook and Access) and advanced QuickBooks knowledge
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and ability to solve inefficiencies with ability to drive new systems
  • Strong collaborative style and deep people management skills
