About Us

Reading Partners launched in 2001 with the mission to expand opportunities for children in underserved communities by fostering a lifelong love of reading, developing strong literacy skills, and building the confidence and self-esteem critical to empowerment and community development.  Reading Partners provides children with robust one-on-one reading support through a structured, research-based curriculum that engages students and provides basic building blocks to supplement their academic growth.  On average, Reading Partners students gain 1.6 months of reading skills for every month in the program.

Working in partnership with teachers, schools, and community volunteers, Reading Partners has grown from serving 100 students in 2003 in northern California with a budget of $180,000 to serving over 2,900 students in California, Washington, D.C., New York, Texas, and Maryland with a budget of almost $8M.  A recipient of significant Social Innovation Fund funding through the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, Reading Partners has plans for continued rapid growth into other regions.  For more information about Reading Partners, please visit www.readingpartners.org.

Position Description

We are currently seeking responsible, high-caliber, patient, and motivated Inclusion Facilitator to join our growing team.   The inclusion facilitiator (ISF) at Hillcrest After School program (ASP) works in conjunction with other team members to maintain a positive inclusive environment for all children in the program. Inclusion Support Facilitator will provide extra support to students with special needs including adapting activities, providing behavioral support, and facilitating social development.

A successful Reading Partners Plus Inclusion Faciliator will have experience and/or the desire to work with elementary school students, in afterschool programs or inclusion programming.   The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to work independently, as well as with support and guidance from Program Manager toward identified goals and objectives.  The ideal candidate will thrive in a casual, yet fast-paced environment and will have the ability to work and communicate in diverse communities. Candidates should be excited about working as part of a team, and interested in receiving ongoing coaching and guidance. Most importantly, candidates must be committed to providing excellent educational opportunities for all students and must be willing to work enthusiastically toward achieving this goal.

Responsibilities

  • Provide additional assistance (e.g., interpret instructions, provide physical assistance) in order to help children learn new academic, recreation and leisure skills.
  • Encourage social interaction between the children with disabilities and group/ participants without disabilities.
  • Adapt activities, as needed, to allow active participation by all children.
  • With assistance from the ASP team members and the inclusion consultant, develop and implement accommodations to meet the needs of all program participants.
  • Provide positive reinforcement or other behavioral intervention, as needed, to facilitate the children’s involvement in the group.
  • Promote the children’s enjoyment in the program.
  • Maintain effective communication with ASP team members, program manger, and families
  • Track and document children’s progress in the development of academic, social, and recreation skills via written progress reports and other assessment tools
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • A.A. Degree or above or High School graduate with 48 Educational Units
  • At least 1 year experience working or volunteering with school-age children with disabilities
  • Knowledge of age and developmentally appropriate recreation activities, disbility resources, teaching strategies, and activities
  • Knowledge of the theory and philosophy of inclusion
  • Willingness and desire to learn about inclusion strategies
  • Patience working with students who need help learning
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to work independently or with limited supervision
  • Commit to a schedule, punctuality is essential to the position
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective and professional role model for students served
  • Good communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • First Aid and CPR preferred, but not required
  • Experience working in after school setting preferred
  • Bilingual a plus.  (Spanish speaking preferred)

Compensation:

$16/hr.  This is a part-time, 20-25 hours a week, non-exempt position.
