The internship in Medicinal Chemistry will support our efforts in the synthesis of potential drug candidates. The intern will conduct multi-step organic syntheses of milligram to gram quantities of target compounds, as well as key intermediates, using established procedures. Under the close supervision of a scientist, the intern’s primary duties will be the synthesis, purification, and characterization of selected organic compounds to support our efforts in one of our drug discovery projects. The intern is expected to have completed a minimum of one year of Organic Chemistry, with significant laboratory experience, demonstrating the ability to work safely. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to the drug discovery process for a selected target in oncology, inflammation, or metabolic disease by participating in project meetings, preparing compounds for testing, and learning about medicinal chemistry and modern methods of drug discovery in an industrial setting. The ideal candidate will have just completed the sophomore or junior year and will be interested in pursuing a career in Biotechnology or an advanced degree in Chemistry (rather than someone interested in an advanced degree in Medicine).
A final presentation is given for the department and then at the company Research Meeting.
Plexxikon is a leader in the discovery and development of novel, small molecule pharmaceuticals. The company has utilized its proprietary discovery platform to successfully develop a portfolio of competitively differentiated clinical and preclinical stage programs in a number of therapeutic areas. Plexxikon’s most advanced program, Zelboraf™ (vemurafenib, and formerly known as PLX4032), has recently been approved by the FDA. Plexxikon's demonstrated capability in discovery and early development uniquely positions the company to develop multiple commercial franchises for different therapeutic indications, and create significant value for Plexxikon and its collaborators.
Plexxikon's novel discovery approach, combined with an experienced management and scientific team, a broad network of scientific and clinical experts, and partnerships that support later stage development, have been key drivers of the company's success since it began operations in 2001. In April 2011, Plexxikon became a member of the Daiichi Sankyo Group, and continues to build its broad and diverse pipeline.
Summer 2014 will be Plexxikon’s tenth year of participation in the undergraduate summer internship program, having experienced highly successful results in each previous year. This is a paid internship that will run for 10-12 weeks over the summer of 2014. Our office is just off I80 at University Avenue. Please find out more at: www.plexxikon.com.
