System Administrator

 Description:  System Administrator Functions:

Sterling Payment Technologies is seeking a highly competent System Administrator that is well versed in Microsoft & Linux administration, VMware virtualization technologies, and Storage (SAN) technologies. This is a multifaceted position ranging from assisting tier 1 support to solutions design & implementation across a broad spectrum of systems and services. The ideal candidate will be experienced in a multitude of IT systems or seeking a position that actively promotes the expansion of their existing skill set. Sterling is growing and the candidate must be able to thrive in a dynamic environment; handling multiple projects, trouble tickets, incidence response, and the shifting of work priorities.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain accurate documentation and diagrams.
  • Follow policies and procedures and provide input to improve them where necessary.
  • Complete corporate and departmental projects as assigned by management.
  • Apply engineering level knowledge and experience to provide solutions to business challenges.
  • Drive new and innovative approaches to solve problems or enhance existing systems.
  • Identify, evaluate, and integrate new technologies.
  • Perform problem & systems analysis and provide engineering recommendations for peer review
  • Perform in-depth troubleshooting across multiple platforms to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Provide systems engineering support for customer-facing services and applications.
  • Administrate and apply engineering solutions to system security platforms/applications to include: system firewalls, Host IPS, web application firewalls, database activity firewalls, Active Directory permissions, system monitoring, and log management solutions.
  • Administrate and apply engineering solutions to virtualization infrastructure.
  • Administrate and apply engineering solutions to storage technologies.
  • Administrate and apply engineering solutions to the backup and replication technologies.
  • Administrate and apply engineering solutions to the system and application monitoring technologies.
  • Perform system and application patching in accordance to compliance mandates.
  • Read & write scripts across several scripting languages.
  • Read & write programs in major programing language(s) and markup languages.
  • Mentor and function as a technical leader to other support technicians.

Requirements:  System Administrator Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, candidates must have experience in a similar role or they must possess significant knowledge, experience, and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities listed. Relevant education and/or training will be considered a plus.

Candidate must be able to:

  • Communicate effectively, in verbal and written formats, with technical and non-technical individuals and groups.
  • Handle and complete multiple projects, work in a fast-paced environment, and meet deadlines.
  • Interact effectively and positively with all levels of personnel.
  • Work efficiently. Both individually and as part of a collaborative, cross-trained team.
  • Demonstrate strong troubleshooting skills and methodology.
  • Perform targeted research independently and thoroughly.
  • Proactively analyze environments for weaknesses and make recommendations to prevent outages.
  • Continually learn about new technologies and apply it to system team initiatives.
  • Create accurate, detailed, and aesthetic system architecture drawings using Visio.
  • Understand and follow strict security guidelines.
  • Work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Be reachable after hours, via mobile phone, to troubleshoot system outages or emergencies.
  • Ability to travel as required: less than 20%, Domestic only.


  • All applicants must pass drug screen, background check, and credit evaluation for consideration.
  • High School diploma required.
  • 4 or more years of relevant enterprise system administration experience required.
  • Demonstrable experience engineering enterprise server architectures required (Microsoft and Ubuntu preferred).
  • Demonstrable experience engineering enterprise storage architectures required (EMC solutions preferred).
  • Demonstrable experience engineering enterprise virtualization systems required (VMware preferred).
  • Demonstrable experience engineering server/application/AD security solutions required.
  • Working knowledge of programming/scripting languages required (Java, PHP, Perl, Python preferred).


  • Engineering solutions for Apache, Tomcat, and IIS configurations preferred.
  • Deployment and configuration of system and application monitoring solutions preferred.
  • Experience with Imperva Web Application and Database Firewall platforms a plus.
  • Experience with MS SQL, Oracle, and MySQL databases a plus.
  • Experience with Sun Solaris a plus.
