  • Build leading edge data systems. Build and tune big data systems that drive the business. Instrument feature code to collect meaningful behavioral data, performance tune a data streaming tool, or build a predictive modeling engine.

  • Strong foundation in computer science combined with demonstrable problem solving aptitude and operations-like understanding of production systems and warehousing systems.
  • You write code and build things because you love to, not because it’s your job.
  • Lifelong learner, constantly experimenting and iterating. Never afraid to ask for help and never reluctant to give it.
  • You are interested in data: how it moves the business; how it can be used to impact the user experience; the statistics of it; the inherent insights and predictive capabilities of big data.
  • Able to quickly dive in, understand, and make a significant contribution to a large system.
  • Passionate about agile software development, continuous integration and test driven development.
  • 5+ years of commercial software development experience and/or operations and warehouse development experience.

Excellence is derived from your talent, not domain experience with specific tools. That said it would be useful if you have a subset of the following:

  • Experience with data warehouses, data cubes, OLAP systems, Hive, Hadoop, Pig, R, Cloudera or similar systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following Perl, Python, C/C++, Java, or PHP
  • Strong *nix knowledge and excellent shell scripting ability.
  • Experience handling structured and unstructured data, and ETL.
  • DevOps or Systems Administration
  • General Database administration experience (preferably MySQL).
  • Experience with some form of monitoring and alerting systems (e.g. cacti, nagios) including custom plug-ins.
  • Strong problem solving ability and analytical skills
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or similar experience


  • MySQL database experience including replication (Master-Master, Master-Slave(s)), backups, recovery, monitoring, data migration, performance tuning, and commonly used storage engines like InnoDB, MyISAM, Merge, Heap, etc.
  • Contributed to open source projects (i.e. code we can review).
  • Developed any of the following: classifiers, large scale recommenders, cluster analysis, graph algorithms, time series analysis and trending, text analytics, anti-fraud models, customer experiments, marketing optimizations, financial models or predictive models of any kind.
  • Knowledge of statistics, A/B testing and experimentation
  • Performance analysis, Capacity planning, DNS, networking
  • Candidates with strong operational (ops/devops roles) background will be highly preferred
