User Experience Designer/Researcher

 

Job Summary

The User Experience Designer/Researcher brings user insights to the product team through research initiatives and helps design intuitive solutions. This person will plan and facilitate research activities to evolve user understanding, in coordination with an agile process. The UX Designer/Researcher will create prototypes, from low-fidelity wireframes to high-fidelity interactions, and validate solution concepts via usability testing. The person will be responsible for advocating user insights to inspire intuitive approaches to complex design problems, leveraging current digital technologies.

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Recommend, plan and facilitate user research initiatives, including qualitative interviews, usability testing (including with screen readers), card sorting and surveys; interpret and present data to a multi-disciplinary team
  • Create user personas, scenarios and user stories, to aid the team in following a user centered yet agile process
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to help understand business problems and technical capabilities, while advocating the needs of end users, to achieve a strong balance between business and user goals
  • Translate user research and functional specifications into design solutions in the form of information architecture deliverables, and low- and high-fidelity prototypes for web sites and web-based applications that will be delivered across desktop, tablet and mobile devices. Create user interface components as needed
  • Lead the preparation and maintenance of accurate and detailed usability and design guides, reinforcing compliance issues, UI guidelines, and ensuring these standards are represented in the final product
  • Stay current on web accessibility requirements and trends. Provide expertise of section 508 and WCAG compliance across solutions

 

Other Duties and Responsibility

  • Bring together agile and user centered design techniques into the process
  • Provide feedback to the development team to validate that usability best practices are being met

 

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

 

Knowledge of: Successful design and usability best practices for web sites and web applications, across digital devices, including mobile. Skilled in user research, as well as incorporating user centered design processes and methodology in an agile environment. Knowledgeable in accessibility and compliance requirements.

 

Ability to: work independently demonstrating initiative; exercise good judgment in administration of responsibilities; adapt to and embrace change in a rapidly changing environment; establish work priorities and manage multiple projects; exhibit flexibility in work schedule and job tasks; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, clients, and other job contacts, including providing key support for the product manager; maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information.

 

Skills in: verbal and written communications, including presentation skills; operation of standard office equipment and personal computer; application of job software including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and prototyping tools.  English word usage, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation; planning, scheduling, organizing work and events.   

 

Minimum Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:

 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (HCI, Human Factors, User Experience, Interactive Media, Information Sciences or related)
  • 5 or more years in user experience, human factors, interaction design or similar role
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, as well as proven problem-solving, client-facing and organizational skills
  • Experience planning and leading user research initiatives and sharing learning’s with team in a collaborative environment
  • Experience with wireframing/prototyping tools
  • Knowledge of HTML 5, jQuery, CSS3, JavaScript and Photoshop
  • Familiarity with AJAX, XML, PHP and other newer web technologies
  • Previous experience in the Higher Education industry a plus

 

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
