Senior Systems Engineer

Position Summary:

The systems engineer will work on a team to operate our data center infrastructure including both the pro-active development of new automation, architecture, and systems capabilities as well as the on-call, reactive response procedures, tier 3+ escalations, and maintenance activities of operations.  The systems engineer role will work cross-functionally with our customer and engineering teams.  The systems engineer will influence and technically lead projects as knowledge of the ConnectSolutions environment is achieved.  

A successful senior systems engineer will participate in and lead multiple technical projects with strong attention to detail and effective communication to update on progress and influence the outcome.  The will have the skill to contribute to the success of the organization and have a willingness to help others accomplish their goals.  This candidate will be in a position to facilitate effective coordination betweek cloud operations and other functional teams in the company.

ConnectSolutions systems environment consists of over 1,000 virtual machines of both Windows and Linux servers across 7 global data centers covering every major global region managed by tools such as Puppet, Icinga, VMWare vCenter, Microsoft Systems Center, and many others to enable real-time collaboration products such as Microsoft Lync and Adobe Connect.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and document systems architecture projects in conjunction with engineering
  • Perform operationalization of products and tools, including development and documentation of runbooks
  • Manage projects (scope, work breakdown, execute, document)
  • Prioritize and plan technical change
  • Execute change and configuration management process
  • Technical lead in incident management, trouble-shoot and organize technical approach to root cause analysis
  • Help with training and development
  • Develop a deep understanding of ConnectSolutions tools and products to provide Tier 3+ support
  • On-call rotation for 24x7x365 coverage

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Local to the San Francisco Bay Area only please
  • Candidate must be eligible for US Government Security Clearance or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related subject; or equivalent job experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a technical operations / systems engineering role
  • Experience in a 24x7x365 on-call role
  • Strong trouble shooting and problem solving skills, and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge and practice with computer networking, Microsoft Windows, Ubuntu or equivalent Linux, virtualization, MS SQL, and automation
  • Knowledge and practice with network protocols and concepts
  • Self-starter, a relentless self-learner who thrives in a highly dynamic environment
  • Track record of ownership and responsibility for production systems
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and, and written and verbal communication

Bonus Points:

  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Understanding of protocols and systems like TCP, UDP, SSL/TLS, CIFS, HTTP, DHCP, SMTP, LDAP and DNS
  • Practical experience with Puppet or equivalent automation tool
  • Practical experience with Nagios/Icinga or equivalent monitoring tool
  • Experience working with a real-time synchronous technology stack
  • Experience working in in a cloud operations environment
  • Experience working with solutions that require high security
