The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a professional membership organization of songwriters, composers and music publishers of every kind of music. ASCAP's mission is to license and promote the music of its members and foreign affiliates, obtain fair compensation for the public performance of their works and to distribute the royalties that it collects based upon those performances. Job Description:

ASCAP is seeking a Director of Public Relations to lead the organization’s press outreach and to manage media campaigns as well as outside PR counsel. This person will work closely with ASCAP Senior VP of Marketing and Communications to develop and execute ASCAP’s overall press and communications strategies and presence, including social and digital campaigns. This person will be a key member of the marketing and strategic communications team at ASCAP, overseeing a wide range of projects, press and media in support of ASCAP’s mission on behalf of its songwriter, composer and music publisher members, as well as its music licensees. The Director of Public Relations will report directly to the SVP/CMO and head of Strategic Communications.


  • Manage press and media campaigns and outside PR counsel
  • Build, develop and maintain strong relationships with key members of the media
  • Work closely with membership, legal and government relations teams to effectively craft messages targeted to various stakeholder groups
  • Serve as on-the-record spokesperson, as appropriate
  • Craft and place op-eds, letters to the editor and public statements on behalf of organization
  • Oversee development and distributionof press releases in connection with newsworthy programs and events
  • Create and manage content for ASCAP’s website, social media properties and various other marketing and communications tools, including ASCAP’s member magazine (Playback) and weekly e-newsletters
  • Develop and oversee ASCAP’s overall social media strategy for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, leveraging social media presence of key members
  • Serve as part of editorial team, contributing creative ideas for marketing and communications
  • Assist in the production of major ASCAP events, such as the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO, the Sundance ASCAP Music Café and various awards shows
  • Represent ASCAP at industry and media events, as appropriate
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned


  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 6+ years of related professional experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively build relationships with media
  • Proficient in social media marketing (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and digital advocacy campaign tools
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to multi-task and
  • Above average knowledge of and passion for many genres of music and an ability to communicate with creative talent at all career levels
  • Ability to travel
  • Entertainment industry experience preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Must be Mac proficient.
