Evaluating Workplace Wellness Technology at PARC, a Xerox company in Palo Alt...
PARC, a Xerox company, is in the Business of Breakthroughs®. Practicing open innovation, we provide custom R&D services, technology, expertise, best practices, and intellectual property to Fortune 500 and Global 1000 companies, startups, and government agencies and partners. We create new business options, accelerate time to market, augment internal capabilities, and reduce risk for our clients.
Since its inception, PARC has pioneered many technology platforms – from the Ethernet and laser printing to the GUI and ubiquitous computing – and has enabled the creation of many industries. Incorporated as an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Xerox in 2002, PARC today continues the research that enables breakthroughs for our clients' businesses.
As one of the most prolific innovation centers in the world, PARC offers an exceptional internship experience. Considered valuable members of our community, interns are fully integrated into the daily activities of PARC's highly collaborative, multidisciplinary culture.
PARC has an internship available in Evaluating Workplace Wellness Technology.
PARC is starting a project to develop a technology-based innovation to assist in workplace wellness. Since this is a one-year endeavor and it is just starting now, it is not possible to say what the technology would be, but examples of the kind of thing we envisage would be:
- A social game that pairs work colleagues whose health challenges are similar and supports them competing to achieve their health goals.
- An automated exercise coach that monitors some aspect of exercise and offers guidance on how to keep improving.
- A diet advisor that analyzes work cafeteria menu items and advises what is the best match for someone’s health needs.
We will be selecting the most promising technology direction to go in around the end of 2012 and building a prototype in 2013. We expect to be at the evaluation stage by the summer of 2013 (although, as research is always unpredictable, there may be delays) and will want to run a publishable study to measure the success of our innovation. The ideal student intern should have some subset or all of the following skillsets:
- Ethnographic research
- User experience design
- User experience evaluation
- Experimental design
- Qualitative data analysis
- Quantitative data analysis
